The Health & Safety at Work etc. Act, 1974, laid down stringent standards for employers. The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations, 1992, clarified some of the duties implied in the Act.
Current legislation puts legal duties on employers:
They must provide safe conditions and safe operations for their employees. If they have five or more employees to prepare a health & safety policy with suitable arrangements for its organisation and implementation. The organisation must have clear lines of responsibility for safety. Employers must carry out suitable and sufficient Risk Assessments before any operation can begin. They should seek the guidance of competent people where necessary.
